Happy Birthday with homemade love

Our 3rd birthday celebration

Is it birthday time for someone special in your family? MAKE their cake and save bundles! You can easily make a beautiful fondant cake from scratch!
Make your favorite cake in a standard shape or dream up a layered cake cut into a three dimensional figure. I found this recipe for a HEAVENLY chocolate cake: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Black-Magic-Cake/Detail.aspx Cover the cake with butter cream frosting then apply the fondant.

Butter Cream Frosting
1 c margarine
2 c shortening
1 t vanilla (clear vanilla for white white)
1/2 c water
3 lbs powdered sugar

Beat together with an electric mixer on low until smooth. Apply smoothly to your cake and let set in the fridge for an hour or so.

Marshmallow Fondant
16 oz marshmallows
3 t water
2 lb powdered sugar
gel food coloring

Melt marshmallows in microwave for 2 minutes. Stir to ensure they are melted. Add sugar and water (if you are doing 1 color of fondant - add the gel coloring now - otherwise wait). Dump onto a powdered sugar dusted counter. Knead until smooth.

Divide your dough into pieces sized for each color you desire. Add color one at a time into each and work/knead it into the dough until smooth (or marbled if desire). If dough becomes too hard to work with - microwave for a few seconds and get back to work.

Fondant can be played with like playdough then sets up very nicely.

  1. Personally not impressed with the TASTE of the Fondant, but it's more about looks...

On the other hand, I could eat a BOWL of the buttercream frosting!
