Create a menu and shopping list.

This may limit shopping trips and extra purchases. What a great day when you've planned all of your meals for the week, shopped and purchased everything, and you're home in time to pull your last quick and easy meal out of the freezer to save additional work for the day. Creating the menu needs to be thorough and reasonable. If you have a family, you need to plan for food for each person taking into account the number of people at meals, picky preferences, required snacks, breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. It's a good idea to start by glancing through your fridge, freezer, and pantry to see what you have and what needs to be used. Make a thorough shopping list by going meal by meal to list everything you could possibly need. By being thorough you can really save yourself time in the end. Our family has an aisle-by-aisle grocery list which also helps us to trigger incidentals of which we may be running short. Finally, go through your fridge and pantry to mark off everything you have already and don't need to purchase.
